QUARANTINE TIMES: CARING FOR THE SISTERS

Updated: Jul 19, 2020

I never thought working in a nursing home would be like this. I started this job not too long ago and I instantly loved it. Being able to come in and help care for these older women brought a smile to my face everyday. Yes, it was very hard at times but that is a part of the circle of life.

Ever since the coronavirus got worse it’s like the atmosphere at work has completely changed. Everyone is always worried and frantic because they don’t want to contract the virus. Since it has gotten worse day by day I have to work a lot of hours. There are times where I have to work two double shifts back to back which means I don’t get to sleep for two days. And I have young children at home. My sister, who has had to return home from college, looks after them while trying to keep up with her online classes and coursework. I know she hasn't a minute to sit down, and now have I. It's taking a toll on all of us.

It has been really rough and people are scared to come to work, but the job has to be done. One day I came into work and I was assigned to care for these two women. They're sisters. The one, in particular, just clicked with me instantly. We talk everyday and even when I am not caring for her, I still stop by to talk to her. She is so sweet and the bond we have created will forever be cherished. She has taught me so much in this little bit of time. She often talks about how she misses her family and it is hard on her because they can’t come to see her. At least I get to see my loved ones at the end of my shifts.

We try to keep our patients as comfortable as we can but no one can comfort you like family does. I just hope this gets better soon because I love seeing the smiles on these two sisters' faces and I know their family misses those smiles too.
