“I have had a 3D Printer for a number of years and have just kind of done a lot of hobby things with it. I am not really an avid 3D Printer, but it's just something that’s kinda fun, and I’ll design my own parts for things I’m fixing and stuff like that.
The guy who built the printer I own started building them in his garage, and now he has over 500 employees. He saw the need for PPE (personal protective equipment) for healthcare workers. Well, he designed a part for a face shield, which is basically just an adjustable headband. You put a sheet of clear film over it, and it’s super easy to make, and healthcare workers during this pandemic really need that stuff.
So he programmed all of his 3D Printers to print out these headbands, and then he puts the clear film in them and has distributed them to hospitals all over. Well, he decided to upload his design to his 3D printer website and said: “hey, everybody should start printing these.”
I started printing the headbands in March with a guy I work with at Flight for Life, where I am a pilot. Flight for Life is an organization where people who need medical attention, whether it be urgent or not, and do not live near a hospital are transported into a plane and flown to a hospital.
Well, due to Covid-19 pandemic, pilots and doctors at Flight for Life do not have all the PPE they need, so my coworker and I have printed around twenty headbands so far and put them together. We have distributed them to the other pilots, doctors, nurses, and paramedics we work with.
At Flight for Life, we are treating every patient as if they have COVID-19 because not everybody shows symptoms. We are trying to distribute them to serve our own needs first because we don’t have the equipment we need. Once we get our needs met, then we will start donating them as part of a group called Make for COVID. It’s an impromptu group that started up where people with specific handy work skills can make parts for hospitals during this pandemic.
It is really nice seeing everyone really coming together for the greater good… but I mean not physically coming together because we all need to social distance.”
WHEN FOLKS PUT THEIR INGENUITY & SKILLS TOGETHER, THEY CAN PUT THE COMMUNITY BACK ON ITS FEET. HELP US DO THE SAME BY MAKING A SMALL DONATION TO GATORS IN NEED. THANK YOU.
