GATOR SNAPSHORT: WE ARE WHAT WE KNIT

My half grandmother taught me how to crochet.

It’s funny because I vividly remember one Christmas when my mom bought me a knitting kit, not realizing that knitting and crocheting are two very different processes. For those who don’t know, crochet uses one needle and knitting uses two. That day, I made it my new year's resolution to teach myself how to knit.

I like to take my time to knit, reflecting on myself as I weave and loop the wool through my fingers. A lot of people see me as this confident, intelligent and easy-going girl. But I see myself as cautious, aloof and sometimes, surprisingly sassy.

I’ll admit, I can be very sensitive and I feel like I have to hide that away because people will think I’m spoiled, or think I haven’t been through a lot… A lot of people have this idea that being in the world and having experiences somehow makes you tougher and insensitive.

When I knit, I feel at peace and I feel like my problems melt away for a while. With each stitch I can distance myself away from the things that trouble me and focus my attention on finishing the piece.

"Knitting has allowed me to learn about myself by channeling my creativity into the pieces I make."

"It also made me realize it's okay not to show all the parts of myself to the world. Like the pieces I create, I am woven from various different skeins. And, even though not every strand is separable, each is crucial to making up the final masterpiece."
