“I want to be the person in the suit, I don't want to be like my parents. My dad works in construction and he wakes up at four in the morning and comes back dirty after climbing a 304 feet tall cell tower to make sure your phone works.
I come from a small rural town of Western PA, a town of steel mills and coal mines. It is a town where there are no good schools or colleges and many people have been left behind. I am lucky, I am one of the first in my family and one of the few people who got out of the town to pursue higher education. This is important to me because a lot of brainy, smart, decent kids like me were left behind.
That’s why I am studying to understand why we were left in the dust, and how I can help them.
I have this distant memory from when I was a kid, I watched a movie called “A Few Good Men.” It is a movie about attorneys. I remember the suits because the suits were a symbol of authority, knowledge, wisdom, and respect. So, my young self-thought he wanted to be an attorney -- of course without understanding the legal complexities. Something I’m learning now.
But the important thing is that I want to control how I make my own decisions and I want to make something of myself. I don’t want to be the small-town boy who was left behind.”
