GATOR SNAPSHORT: LET'S QUOKKA ABOUT THIS

Updated: Aug 5, 2020

"My friends keep laughing when I freeze, or throw caution to the wind and sprint at the sight of a squirrel.

They think I’m crazy when I tell them the squirrels on campus, by Schultz Hall, are out to get me.

Those things, I swear, hiss every time I walk past, and appear to be armed with pine cones that they can throw at me.

But I’m not crazy, because all rodents, and I include (ahem!) your cute, cuddly, rabbits, are diabolical.

When we were in Australia, my friend and I went to hike on an island called Rottnest -pronounced like ‘rat nest’.

My friend wanted to decide where we went, and I let her. Big mistake!

We wouldn’t have been lost if I’d navigated.

Her first choice took us right into a pelican, and her second into a handful of quokkas. That’s where everything went wrong.

They look cute at first, but I see now that their smiles are actually mischievous and evil. We were drawn in by their cuteness, and Ivy tried to take a picture of one.

It bit her right as she took the photo - I wish I had snapped that one because it would've been good.

After we got away from that quokka, another one decided to claw through the plastic bag she was holding. It even crawled into her purse and dug around.

The two of us tried to reason with it and shoo it away.

I was like 'let’s talk about this' to the quokka, while Ivy tried to scare it off.

But I managed to get a photo with the one that bit Ivy, and damn, did that thing look evil!

That was the last time I let a friend navigate"
