“Being away from my family can be difficult, I learned this when I came all the way to Allegheny College in northwest Pennsylvania, from New Mexico.
To avoid feeling homesick, I started to hang out with different people and I quickly developed a friends’ group.
In this group of friends, we do everything together. We listen to K-pop for hours and we stay up and talk for ages.
One night we were all bored and one of the girls in the group suggested that we should make a blanket fort. No one was really into the idea, but I volunteered to make the fort with her.
As we were making the blanket fort, the girl and I talked about the K-pop groups we listen to and about different shows that we watch. We were surprised to find out that we had a lot of things in common.
After we finished building the fort, she suddenly looked at me and announced, “This fort is called Blankets Ville.” We both burst out laughing.
After that we didn’t have any reason to speak to or text each other for two weeks. The awkward silence was broken when she texted me to have dinner with her at Brooks. But, when I didn’t respond to her text immediately, she cancelled me two minutes later.
We haven’t said a word to each other since this happened.
This is how college friendships form and break. All you need is one smartphone.”
