I graduated from Allegheny in 2006, and ever since I returned, in 2019, to work in the Career Education Office, I have fallen in love all over again with my Alma Mater and the Allegheny Community.
In the middle of this Spring semester, when we were all told we had to work remotely, we had no time to waste. We had to think on the spot and create solutions and plans to help our students.
For myself, I continue to communicate remotely with students, through the Career Center. I am still helping the best I can to polish resumes, give advice on doing interviews, and overall giving hope to students for the future.
The International Education Office in the Allegheny College Academic Gateway has also been a cornerstone during this entire ordeal. They had and have been working until 2:00 A.M. every day, trying to collect information and work out how to help our international students who are either back in their home countries or stuck on campus.
They have been nothing but troopers trying to get those kids to feel that they haven't lost their Gator home and that they feel safe no matter where they are. While these are strange and scary times, personally I don't think this is new to us.
Our student community has battled financial losses, homelessness, sickness, and even death.
But something our students have shown is their resilience -- with managing their academics, their long-distance friendships, planning for their futures, and taking stock of their changed lives. With each new challenge, the Allegheny community keeps finding a way to step up and find a way to keep each other strong.
I speak for all of us within the administration that you students are the reason we call Allegheny our home. And the support, work, and strength you have all shown through this pandemic is truly inspiring.
